HANDMADE WOODEN CANOE PADDLES
Fancy a hand-crafted canoe paddle, made by hand, to your specifications?
Steven Hanton has been making canoe paddles for over 10 years from Scottish native woods and regularly takes commissions. He's made paddles from cherry, ash, maple, sycamore, birch and black walnut.
With a little care, paddles should last a lifetime.
He offers 2 standard designs; the 'Algonquin' and the 'Guide'. These paddle designs were trusted to him by Alexandra Conover Bennett (paddle maker, canoe guide and Northwoods expert from Maine, USA) several years ago and he's honoured to be able to replicate these designs. Other designs are available on request.

The Guide paddle is a general purpose paddle with a fairly wide flaring blade. This paddle is great on rivers but can also be used on lochs. Traditionally made long to allow stand up paddling, it can also be made normal length for bow or stern paddlers.
The Algonquin paddle is designed more as a deep water paddle and is neat and lightweight. Great for deep water and long days on the loch. This paddle design was the favoured paddle of the legendary Canadian canoeist Omer Stringer.
Ash is the most common request, but other woods are available. Paddles are finished either in varnish or oil depending on preference. Contact us to discuss your paddle or make your own on our Canoe Paddle Workshop.
